What is a stretch mark?

Stretch Marks, or striae gravidarum, are a unique type of scar because they only involve the dermis—there is no break in the epidermis itself.  It mainly occurs when the skin is stretched rapidly and put under excessive tension. It can affect anyone and while some of those who are affected report a burning or itching feeling prior to appearance of stretch marks, in many cases no symptoms are noticed prior to the development of stretch marks.
